From inside Multnomah County’s Inverness jail, murder suspect Charles Sampson built a burgeoning business, police say.
He’d dial a local number from a Dorm 8 phone, and get patched in to Qwest Communications, through a three-way call. Sampson then would request Business Enhancement Lines, falsely identifying himself with a stolen Social Security number.
When a Qwest employee asked him the name of the business, police say Sampson stammered: “Ah, ah, ah,” before replying: “Gold R Us.”
With that, the phone company issued Sampson 11 phone numbers that would be forwarded directly to fellow inmates’ family and friends.
